ABOUT THE RELEASE
Once in a rare while, an invitation arrives that clears the table.
An invitation that opens the door to a world of new musical possibilities you never thought you’d get the chance to realize. Such an invitation came from Agnete from Copenhagen Phil on a March morning in 2013. The invitation was to help create a New Year’s concert that would unite a symphony orchestra, a rhythmic multi-instrumental trio, and audience interaction.
The trio ended up consisting of Malene Brask, Stefan Andersen, and myself, and I was paired with composer and arranger Benjamin de Murashkin, with whom we collaborated to have the trio’s music arranged for symphony orchestra.
This release consists of six works for trio + orchestra:
“The Body The Beat The Phil & The Crowd”
Opens the concert. Here, all the participants are introduced, and I interact/improvise with the audience, my trio, and the orchestra.
“Je suis un arbre”
A trio composition for boomwhackers, bells, and various percussion, reimagined to include orchestra and audience.
“La Grande Terraza”
A tango composition written in Buenos Aires during my compositional travel project Global Compositions, in collaboration with Argentine musicians. For the orchestral version, I expanded the piece by adding two extra movements.
“Glockenblumen”
A composition co-written with Malene Brask, originally part of the trio Body Rhythm Factory’s repertoire. In this arrangement, Benjamin de Murashkin added an extra movement.
“Circkles”
A work composed by Benjamin de Murashkin specifically for this occasion. He wrote the orchestral parts and invited us in the trio to create our own roles within the piece.
“Danzón No. 2”
A composition by Arturo Márquez.
Copenhagen Phil suggested we include this piece in the concert. I took it as a challenge to learn a demanding piano role and, for the first time, try performing in that way with a symphony orchestra.
The concert was performed five times around Zealand.
I chose to invest most of my fee into filming the final concert at the old DR concert hall on Rosenørns Allé and turning it into a release. This has made it possible for me to present the concert to other symphony orchestras around the world and has helped the project live on.
Since the release, the project has been performed with orchestras in Norway, China, France, Denmark and with various orchestras across Germany, including 8 concerts at the fantastic Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
You’re of course very welcome to share any feedback or ask questions about the production here on the sleeve.
